Mon, 20 Oct 2008 11:29 Mini Wetland at Rookery Close Recreation Ground For many years now, part of the Rookery Close recreation area has suffered from poor drainage, with the ground remaining boggy throughout most of the year, limiting the amount of activity that could take place on that part of the field. The Joint Recreation Committee asked an Environmental Officer from the County Council to inspect the site and offer some suggestions as to what might be done. The development of a mini wetland was proposed and as part of the consultation process an article was published in the Chronicle. More » The timetable for the development of the area fell somewhat behind schedule, for a number of reasons. Firstly, there was the question of planning permission. There was subsequently a delay, while the District Council came to a decision as to whether planning permission was required. In the event, it was not. The intention had always been that the Primary School would be heavily involved in the project, given the huge potential of the area for the study of mini beasts and habitats. It was further thought that the educational benefits of the project would be enhanced by the direct involvement of a County Council Environmental Officer with expert knowledge of the types of creatures, which might be attracted to the area, and plants, which would thrive there. Busy schedules intervened. However, Andy Hayes visited the school during the summer term to give the children an informative session on wetland plants and animals. Thereafter the school summer holiday commenced- and the rain came down! With the children back at school in September, they have now been able to visit the site, to make an initial assessment and to install the wetland plants, which will be the start of the Kibworths mini-wetland. The Parish Council was able to make a contribution of £100 towards the cost of the plants. A low wooden knee rail will now be erected to mark the boundary of the wet area but, the mini wetland will remain open for the whole community to enjoy. Huge thanks must go to the children who worked so hard on the planting, to the Head teacher Paul Stone for his enthusiastic support of the project, and to Andy Hayes of the County Council for taking time out to share his expert knowledge with our children. A final word of warning concerning water safety, although the water in the wetland is very shallow, it could still be a risk for very young children, particularly those under 5 years old. The Parish Council therefore would like to emphasise this is not an area where very young children (i.e. up to 5 years old) should be allowed to play without adult supervision. Clerk to the Kibworth Joint Recreation Committee « Less Thu, 02 Oct 2008 10:17 DONATE A SEAT The Parish Council would like to replace the bench next to the doctor’s surgery in Station Street.
